Turn My Mic Up Saturdays: SWARVY In The Mix for TNP

Published on May 19th, 2012

Hello all, I know its been a while since I have posted and for that I am sorry, I landed a role in a short film and was abducted by that for a few weeks go figure. Now that I am back I want to start things off right with a TNP mix from one of my favorite Philly based producers and DJ’s who goes by the name of SWARVY . I’ve had the pleasure to work and throw some parties with SWARVY and every time he is better than he was before. SWARVY ‘s recent music drops have been getting a lot of attention, so much so he has played shows in Virginia, NYC, and of course Philly. SWARVY digs deep for his rich sounds that some call experimental hip hop while bringing in various sounds from across all genres to make an interesting blend of eclectic sounds. I had a brief conversation with SWARVY here’s what he had to say.

What inspires the sound that you have?

I’d say the people who I’ve worked with and learned from affect the way my music sounds the most. That includes the various groups I’ve performed in and all the people I’ve done beat sessions with . . .

How has your growth as an artist been?

Kinda all over the place. I started out playing piano when i was really young, and learned how to play bass and guitar and drums and stuff after that. When I was 14, i started playing out a lot in a few different instrumental bands and giggin out playing jazz with a bunch of different kids. Then just went on to make my own music, doing all the parts myself which eventually lead me to where I’m at now, doing this sampler/computer music stuff.

When did you start making music?

I can’t really remember exactly when it started but I remember i used to just record random sht onto our family computer all the time and paste sounds together and chop em up pretty much since the software was available on our PC–which was pretty early for me. I don’t think I started seriously trying to produce the stuff that eventually became Swarvy until like high school. So I think i was like 16 or 17 when I started doing that. I’m 22 now.

What next for you?

I’m bout to graduate school in a week, so I’m just gonna try to save up some money and keep makin moves. been putting out my own music for a little over a year now and I’m really just trying to spread the word, play out more, and get a proper physical release out hopefully within the next year or two. So . . . keep your eyes peeled . . . til then, just more bandcamp drops to holdover until the I get this album together …
