Toro Y Moi w/ Braids + Adventure @ The Church 4/12/11

Published on April 16th, 2011

Toro Y Moi returned to The Church on Tuesday night, this time playing new tracks off of his latest release, Underneath The Pine. The new album consists of songs you can dance to, and each song has a unique feel for the 80’s. In the Urban interview, Chazwick Bundick, the mastermind behind Toro Y Moi, says he was influenced by 80’s funk, and the video for “New Beat” had a similar 80’s dance movie vibe to it. The first time Toro Y Moi came to Philadelphia at the First Unitarian Church, it was to open for Psychedelic band Caribou. This time, he brought Montreal’s shoegaze band Braids along with Baltimore’s Adventure.

Adventure lightened up the stage, and as the first act they knew how to move a crowd. Dimming the lights and projecting brightly colored visuals, Adventure played songs from their new album Lesser Known, such as “Rio,” “Light’s Out,” “Fool’s Paradise,” “Relax the Mind,” and “Smoke and Mirrors.” The crowd favorite that made everyone particularly happy was their single “Feels Like Heaven.” The last time Adventure came to Philadelphia was at the warehouse venue The OX with another Baltimore favorite, Lower Dens.

After dancing to Adventure, the crowd took a break with the warm shoegaze band, Braids. Their intertwined vocals and melodies were a different vibe than both Toro Y Moi and Adventure, but it was a ladies’ favorite. They played songs off their latest album as well, entitled Native Speaker. The band’s single “Lemonade” provided a rise and fall of rhythm, with both of the singers looping over and over one another.

Last but not least, Toro Y Moi came through with a huge build up to open their set. Their single and first song of the night, “New Beat,” turned The Church into a ballroom. Accompanying Bundick was his backing band, including live drums. Fans would usually most likely want to hear the calmest of the chillwave genre, but most were very pleased to hear Toro Y Moi with the backing band. Toro Y Moi also played songs from his first release Causers of This, and again, songs were different but not doubtful with the live drums. After the band finished their last song from Underneath, they came out for a two song encore with “Blessa” and “How I Know.”
