KreayShawn: Taking Dubstep to Rapstep

Published on June 25th, 2011

It’s surprising how scarcely dubstep has been featured in today’s rap and hip-hop world, despite its appearance in other genres such as the sub-electronic likes of Burial, James Blake, and Radiohead. One would think that dubstep was made for establishing that gnarly hip-hop beat and bumpin’ sub.

A few weeks ago, a friend of mine introduced me to West-Coast female rapper KreayShawn, and showed me the video for her upcoming hit “Gucci Gucci”. I immediately became mesmerized by its heavy-dub beat echoes, the scratching details and swirling synth with murmurs of “one big room, full of bad bitches” throughout the track.  Alas! A hip-hop artist incorporating the likes of dubstep to produce a fresh sound, yet still maintaining that classic old-school style.  KreayShawn puts her skills to work by combining various elements from old-school hip-hop, which give this single that Biggy, SnoopLost Boyz flair as well. Radio shows, such as Eminem’s Shade45, gave mention this week to KreayShawn’s fresh release, predicting “Gucci Gucci” to become a colossal hit.

The hook, “Gucci-Gucci-Louis-Louis-Fendi-Fendi-Prada / Basic bitches wear that shit, so I don’t even bother,” is witty, catchy, and even empowering (if I do say so myself); she proclaims her disdain for the “basic bitches” with cleverly effective rhymes, whether it’s the every-review-will-quote-this line, “I got the swag and it’s pumping out my ovaries,” or the brilliant fuck you line, “Bitch, you ain’t no Barbie, I see you work at Arby’s / number two, supersize, hurry up, I’m starving,” which is still funny through the 50th listen.

“Gucci Gucci” is the best track from her free mixtape Kittys X Choppas and X The Bay (Feat. V-nasty).  There are other hot tracks too, with more heavy beats (“Mobb Freestyle”) and amusing lines. However, it’s phrases such as, “I’m rollin’ up my cat nip and shittin’ in your litter” that make “Gucci Gucci” so great.

But who is this KreayShawn? She’s a 21-year-old Bay Area Berkeley Film School dropout named Natassia Zolot who embraces her thin, white-girl voice and her flail-y, spindly arms. KreayShawn is from East Oakland, although according to her blog she lives in Los Angeles, and is the daughter of the guitarist for the legendarily unknown Oakland garage girl group the Trashwomen.

After posting the video for her single “Gucci Gucci”, she generated nearly two million YouTube views in just two weeks. Jasper Dolphin and Left Brain of the hip-hop group OFWGKTA also make appearances in the video.

In interviews, she has announced the next song she would like to release will be called “Left Eye.” “We have a song that I want to come out with next called ‘Left Eye.’ It’s basically about catching your man cheating and getting revenge. It’s super angry but funny with the little witty comments and rhymes. Two Stacks produced that.” It has also been reported that KreayShawn is working to make some more magic with the one and only Trina.

On June 8th, it was announced that she signed a recording contract with Columbia Records. This young rappin’ white-girl got that “swag and it’s pumpin’ out her ovaries” indeed.
