BO-PEEP’S TROPICAL BLEATS, VOL. 1

Published on October 22nd, 2010

It occurred to me the other day that no one appreciates the music I appreciate: Tribal House, UK Funky, Baile Funk, Kuduro, etc. When I mention… say… L-Vis 1990, or French Fries, or Buraka Som Sistema, or Schlachthofbronx, everyone looks at me like I’m from Mars. But all of that ends today. From now on, every Friday, I’m going to be giving you the hottest tropical bleats (ha ha, get it?) on the planet. And then you’ll be excited as I am about them. And this all starts now… or at least just below.

Bad Gal (Crookers Remix) [Douster Caliente Edit] – Savage Skulls, Douster, Robyn <- Mad Decent is awesome. They’re always giving out the goods. This one’s a true stomper, with its plodding kicks, infectious claps, vocal snips, and obligatorily strange Crookers synth stabs. Good warm up tune, just before you drop the real heat.

Numbra One (Original Mix) – Zombies For Money <- Remember the “real heat” I just talked about above? Well, this is it. Zombies For Money might be one of my favorite duos ever. They’re so cool, in fact, that they released their first EP for free — this gem included. It’s Kuduro and Dutch House, on crack. Enough said.

Tell ‘Em (Kingdom Remix) – Sleigh Bells <- And here we have the flip side of the tropical coin: UK Funky, the holy spawn of Tribal Electro House, Dubstep, Deep House, and UK Garage. And this remix by two-step wizard Kingdom (who, oddly enough, is from Brooklyn), is a perfect example. Gone are the screeching guitar and distortion and general “Lo-Fi” inclination of the original Sleigh Bells tune, replaced with swallow-you-whole bass and ghostly wailing. Ravers, save this one for late in the night.

Spark (Canblaster Remix) – J-Wow <- Canblaster has been killing it lately, in just about every conceivable way. This remix of Buraka Som Sistema’s own J-Wow alternates between airy and unbearably heavy, with high-fluting synths and shake-the-Earth lows — and naturally, they come together after the drop to blow your mind into the canopy. I may have posted this track last, but it might be the most massive one of the four. Decide for yourself. Just be sure to turn your speakers all the way up. Also check out the just-released Spark – EP, available on Juno Download.

That’s it for this week, but swing by next Friday for even more Tropical Bleats… and the Friday after that… and the one after that…
